An American teacher's holiday next to the Garden Route's Tsitsikamma National
Park turned into a nightmare while out jogging on Sunday when she was
overpowered and raped, allegedly by two illegal fishermen, Netwerk24 reported.
The 47-year-old woman was jogging in the area at about 12:00 when the two suspects - aged 25 and 26 years respectively - called out to her. She kept on jogging, and the two men caught up with her, dragged her into the bushes and raped her.
After her attackers fled, the woman rushed back to the resort adjoining the park - where she was staying - to get help. Personnel immediately called the Stormsriver police, who in turn launched an immediate search for the men.
The victim's accurate description of the men's identical tattoo marks led to their arrest by 19:30 on Sunday.
The woman was admitted to the Knysna Hospital. She was on a flight back home
immediately after her release, and by Monday was already in Johannesburg. The
victim teaches at an American school in Gauteng, the police confirmed.
Sanparks said in a statement the attack happened in the park in the vicinity
of a hiking trail where overnight facilities and guided tours are offered.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart has confirmed the incident, and added that the suspects will appear in the Stormsrivier Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
Sanparks praised the police for their swift response and arrest of the suspects. "We wish the victim the best in this difficult time. We trust that the law will take its course.
“This is so shocking. I can just imagine what the woman must think about our country now," Pieter Le Roux, one of the landowners in the area, said. "But I hope the law will take its course."
Humansdorp Cluster Commander, Brigadier Neil Jantjies, commended the members for tracing and arresting the suspects so speedily.
“Crimes against women and children are a priority for the SAPS and we will leave no stone unturned, when investigating such cases,” he said.
