A police officer is undergoing surgery following a shootout with suspects.
Two warrant officers were following up on suspects with firearms in public view yesterday evening in Port Elizabeth.
While searching the four suspects, one of them opened fire and shot warrant officer Ewald Els in the upper chest.
The police’s Andre Beetge says one of the suspects was arrested and three fled the scene.
“Both of them survived the attack and one of them was taken to hospital where he is undergoing surgery.”
