Excitement is brewing Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape as the city gets into the final stages of its preparations to host the national Reconciliation Day celebrations.
Speaking to SABC News Nelson Mandela Bay spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki says the city provides the perfect backdrop to host such an auspicious event in the South African calendar.
“Who will be better fitting to host an event of reconciliation at a national level than us as Nelson Mandela Bay. A city named after the king of reconciliation in the country and the whole world, Tata Nelson Mandela.”
The Metro has been lauded for its efforts in unifying the society in the spirit of reconciliation, this factor which Mniki attributes to the people of the city. He says after 1994 they have led the way in putting past evils of apartheid behind them to come out as a united force that displays the spirit of reconciliation.
“If you remember, way back Nelson Mandela Bay – Port Elizabeth, Dispatch and Uitenhage are known for being champions of fighting for liberation, fighting for a non-racial South Africa, this was the heart of the struggle.”
With President Zuma expected to give the Key Note Address, Mniki says they expect people to come out in their numbers to listen to the President's message. Furthermore the metro say they are certain that those that come out will put together a display of what the metro is about.
