GELVANDALE - MAN TO APPEARS IN COURT FOR ALLEGEDLY LYING ABOUT BEING HIJACKED

A 33-year-old Gelvandale man appeared in the Gelvandale Magistrates’ Court yesterday,9 March 2016 on a charge of defeating the ends of justice. It is alleged that on Monday, 7 March 2016, Simphiwe Prins Payi reported to police that he was hijacked on the previous night of his white Ford Icon in Gail Road. A case of carjacking was opened. Payi alleged that he was held at gunpoint while at the robots in Gail Road and forced out of his vehicle. Police investigations revealed that no such incident took place as the incident could not be captured on the CCTV footage.

Payi’s vehicle was found by police on the N2 between Cotswold and Stanford Road on Sunday evening (6/03). The keys were still in the ignition. The vehicle was impounded by police.

After opening the case and been informed that his vehicle was in police custody, Payi wanted to withdraw the case of carjacking. Police suspect that when Payi got out of the vehicle, he had forgotten where he had parked.

He was arrested on Tuesday, 8 March 2016 and appeared in court on the following day. He was released on R200 bail and the case is remanded to 30 March 2016.

Police have issued a stern warning to people who open false cases. Criminal charges and civil claims may be opened against the perpetrator should they be exposed. Civil claims  could be instituted to recover costs involved. False reports impact on crime statistics and creates an inaccurate account of crime.
