PORT ELIZABETH - DOCTOR ACCUSED OF SEXUALLY ASSAULTING PATIENT RELEASED

A doctor accused of sexually assaulting a patient in Port Elizabeth was released shortly after the case was referred back to police for further investigation.

The man was due to appear in court on Thursday after it was alleged that he had sexually assaulted a woman on his examination table.

“The doctor was arrested this morning and he was due to appear in court later in the day," said Port Elizabeth police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg.

"When the prosecution examined the docket they identified some outstanding investigations and the case was sent back to police. Once police rectify all the shortcomings, the doctor will be rearrested,” she said.

Janse van Rensburg said the alleged victim claimed she was uncomfortable with how the doctor examined her.

The South African National Civic Organisation said in a statement that it condemned the alleged incident.

“We call on other patients that might have suffered sexual abuse at the hands of the same doctor to [make themselves known] for the law to take its course," said Sanco national spokesperson, Jabu Mahlangu.
