Nelson Mandela Bay Mayoral candidate Athol Trollip has accused sitting Mayor Danny Jordaan of trying avoid a televised debate on governance in that region.
According to Trollip a debate between the two leaders had been scheduled for broadcast on a national station this week.
“A debate planned for this week with a major national television network has been canned because the ANC’s Danny Jordaan refuses to debate and answer to the people,” said Trollip in a statement this week.
“What is Danny Jordaan scared of? No good stories to tell, no delivery successes during his mayorship, a $10million FIFA scandal, his allegiance to Jacob Zuma?”
Trollip said the latest developments were merely a sign of the times in the region, accusing Jordaan of operating this way since he took over at the helm.
“A worrying trend has developed in the NMB Mayor’s office, with Jordaan often ditching important meetings without notice, sometimes leading to violent protests as we saw in Colchester 12 days ago,” explained Trollip.
“Broken promises are piling up under Mayor Jordaan’s leadership and he is hiding from accountability. I have always said that I am willing and ready to answer to the people of South Africa, just as I was for this proposed debate. I confirmed my attendance at the debate.
“The ANC is in turmoil in NMB as they are yet to officially announce their mayoral candidate or any of their councillor candidates for the 2016 local elections, having missed many of their own announcement deadlines, as repetitively promised by national spokesperson, Zizi Kodwa,” said Trollip.
“As a Mayoral Candidate for Nelson Mandela Bay, I will debate any party leadership on the DA’s plans to bring change to the Bay; change that improves service delivery, cuts corruption and creates jobs.
“As such, my offer to Mayor Jordaan remains; let’s debate service delivery and the fight against corruption, Mayor Jordaan. Let’s give the people the opportunity to decide who they want to be their Mayor by holding a public debate.”
