EASTERN CAPE - INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED INTO FIRE WHICH DESTROYED 4 GROCERY STORES

An investigation has been launched into the cause of a fire that destroyed four grocery stores at Mqanduli in the Eastern Cape. It's alleged that over 30 men tried to break into one of the shops using  a gas cutter and sparks may have caused the fire.

The town has no fire hydrants and this has proved to be a huge challenge for firefighters who have had to use a nearby river from which to cart water. Although the shops burnt down, some business owners were still trying to salvage whatever they could while others stood in disbelief.

Muhammad Asif, who lost his entire stock, blames the fire brigade for their late response. "Fire brigade took more than one hour," says Asif. King Sabatha Dalidyebo Municipality spokesperson, Sonwabo Mapoza, says their fire fighters responded swiftly and were fully equipped.

"When our firemen arrived at the scene, they were stoned by the robbers. Preventing them to fight the fire. Our fire hydrants were fully loaded of water due to the extent of the damage, our water tanks were emptied they had to get the water from the nearby river," says Dalidyebo.

Meanwhile, the police had their hands full chasing away looters. Police spokesperson, Zamukulungisa Jozana, says the police are still investigating the cause of the fire.
