GRAHAMSTOWN - OVER 1600 STUDENTS RESULTS WITHHELD BY RHODES UNIVERSITY

Rhodes University has withheld June results of students who have not paid 50% of their annual tuition fees.

The institution argues that it cannot operate without tuition and residence fees, and that they are financially constrained.

The university said on their website that it was concluded at a financial sustainability workshop involving Deans and Senior Leadership, to take a decision to withhold the examination results of all students who still owed more than 50% of the fees due at the time results are released.

Student Representative Council (SRC) President Gift Sandi told SABC, that everyone was shocked by the decision that was communicated a day before results were released.

“At the end of the 2015 academic year, Rhodes University made considerable concessions with regard to the payment of tuition and residence fees. Formerly, a 50% Minimum Initial Payment (MIP) had been required to allow students to register,” university added on their website.

The university was adamant that this decision will not be taken lightly.

However, those who are part of the financial scheme National Student Financial Aid Scheme will not be affected by the decision to withhold results.

The university told Sandi that the number of students who have outstanding fees are about 1616 students.

The institution sad those who have been affected must contact the Fees Office, to discuss the way forward.
