SOUTH AFRICA - DRIVERS WARNED TO FILL UP AS PETROL INDUSTRY STRIKE MAY CAUSE PUMPS TO RUN DRY

There are fears that pumps at petrol station around the country could run dry as a result of the strike called by labour union, Chemical Energy Paper Printing Wood and Allied Workers Union (CEPPWAWU).

The strike is expected to affect mainly fuel refineries and depots impacting on delivery to filling stations.

CEPPWAWU's Clement Chitja says their members in the petroleum industry are embarking on a nationwide strike following a deadlock in wage talks.

Chitja says, "The reasons why we are taking this bold action is because wage negotiations faltered and did not deliver an agreement as anticipated."

He says the reason why there was no agreement is because the union is pursuing a 9% wage increment in one year whereas employers want multi year agreements.
