PORT ELIZABETH - ANC GOING TO COURT TO STOP NEWLY ELECTED NELSON MANDELA BAY COUNCIL FROM SITTING

The African National Congress (ANC) in Nelson Mandela Bay appears to be pushing ahead with a court case to interdict the council from sitting.

Party officials have confirmed they issued an instruction to lawyers to attempt to halt this morning’s inaugural meeting where the Democratic Alliance (DA)'s Athol Trollip was elected mayor.

The party claims the proportional representation seat allocation for the metro was flawed.

ANC regional secretary Beza Ntshona says the party is still discussing the matter.

“Those people were given instructions indicated, but there was a case to take forward in this particular matter, so the letter was returned on those basis. But we’ve discussed the nitty-gritties on how do we take that forward now.”

Trollip says the DA' is not concerned by the ANC's threat.

“A letter is not an interdict. The ANC can write letters as much as they like, there’s a big difference between an interdict and a letter. And even the letter directed to the municipal manager is misdirected. If they are worried about how the calculation was done for seats they should have directed that to the Electoral Court.”
