PORT ELIZABETH - EASTERN CAPE EDUCATION DEPT TO INVESTIGATE RACISM AT LAWSON BROWN HIGH SCHOOL

The Eastern Cape Education Department will set up a task team to investigate allegations of racism at Lawson Brown High School.

Black female pupils at the Port Elizabeth school took to Twitter, saying they'd been told they wouldn’t be allowed to write mock exams unless they got rid of their afros.

The institution backtracked on its decision and apologised following a protest.

The department's Malibongwe Mtima says a meeting with parents and the school’s governing body will take place.

"This is not only about hair as there are now other allegations relating to racism. We need to have an open mind to deal with this."

This follows allegations of racist practices at the Pretoria High School for Girls. Learners say they are being discriminated against for wearing their natural hair.
