Police arrested four suspects after a stolen vehicle they were driving rolled over on the N2 Highway near the St Albans off-ramp in Port Elizabeth on Thursday afternoon. It is alleged that the red Mazda Sting had been stolen outside a doctor’s surgery in Jacob Street, Humansdorp, early on Thursday.
According to the police, shortly after it was reported stolen, all police vehicles in surrounding police stations were alerted. An alert police officer spotted the vehicle on the N2 Highway heading towards Port Elizabeth and a chase ensued after the driver failed to stop.
“As the vehicle approached the St Albans off-ramp while entering Port Elizabeth, the driver seemed to have lost control and the vehicle rolled,” described police spokesperson, Sergeant Majola Nkohli.
“Three suspects were arrested on the scene, two of whom were seriously injured and the driver managed to flee into surrounding bushes and a manhunt was launched and police combed the area."
Later on, the driver was arrested near Seaview while the two injured suspects were taken to hospital under police guard.
The other two suspects were taken back to Humansdorp police station and are expected to appear in the Humansdorp Magistrate's Court soon on charge of theft of motor vehicle and possibility of additional charges.
