Teenager caught trying to smuggle groceries filled with dagga to prisoners

A teenager was arrested on Monday afternoon after trying to pass groceries containing dagga to prisoners en route to prison.

Members of the Kenton on Sea VISPOL arrested the 17-year-old male at about 2pm.

Police spokeswoman Captain Mali Govender said he was trying to pass groceries including two 1kg packets of mealie meal and a 2.5kg packet of sugar to the prisoners.

“The members searched all three packs and found cylinders wrapped in black packets and packed into mealie meal packets. It contained dagga‚” she said.

“The packet of sugar had a wrapping containing a cell phone. The suspect faces a charge of possession of dagga. The dagga weighed 310g with a street value of R930.”
