PORT ELIZABETH - DRAMATIC SHOOTOUT IN KWAZAKHELE SEES COP SHOT AND SUSPECT KILLED

A Port Elizabeth policeman has been wounded and a robbery suspect killed after two men robbed an officer of his firearm.

Police spokesperson, Captain Andre’ Beetge, said the incident happened in Ngqondela Street, in Kwazakhele, Port Elizabeth, late on Sunday afternoon.

He said two policemen had gone to a house in the street as part of their work.

Beetge said as the one policeman entered the yard of the house, his colleague, who was still approaching the house, was accosted by two gunmen.

He said they took the policeman’s firearm and then opened fire on the other policeman in the yard, wounding him in the leg.

Beetge said the Constable was still able to fire back, killing one of the suspects while his accomplice fled.

The policeman’s stolen firearm and that weapon held by the suspect were recovered at the scene.

Beetge said the wounded policeman was rushed to hospital.

The search for the other suspect is underway.
