Strelizia Primary School in Port Elizabeth's Northern Areas will close its gates from Thursday due to safety concerns.
Principal Clifton Jantjies said the decision was taken at a meeting between the school and parents who are of the view that the school is unsafe for learning.
This follows a shooting incident behind the school premises in Bethelsdorp on Tuesday.
Jantjies said there is no proper fence around the building and this has been communicated several times to the Department of Education in Bhisho.
He said they will be approaching the Department again about its plans to enclose the school.
An organisation, Northern Areas Survivors and Ambassadors Against Gangsterism is calling on the private sector to help out.
Spokesperson, Yolande Le Roux, said they were supporting the school's appeal to corporates to assist with sponsorship for fencing.
Meanwhile, Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane and the Education MEC, Fundile Gadi, are going to meet with principals in East London on Thursday to “fix the environment where teaching and learning takes place in the province”.
