SOUTH AFRICA - PETS & FIREWORKS, HERE'S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR GUY FAWKES

he NSPCA is urging people to be considerate and to adhere to by-laws related to fireworks ahead of Guy Fawks Day celebrations on Tuesday.

Traditionally the day is marked with various celebrations across the country, including setting off fireworks, which can cause distress for many animals.

The organisation said cats and dogs are afraid of fireworks due to their ability to hear a wider range of sounds.

"Dogs can hear five times more acutely than humans; and cats about twice as acutely as dogs," the SPCA said.

Listed below are guidelines from the organisation to help pet owners during this time:

Ensure all animals have identification.
If possible, stay home with them if you suspect fireworks fiends are about.
If you can’t be home with them, keep them inside and preferably in a room such as the kitchen where the windows are higher.
Attempt to mask any noise by drawing curtains and playing calming music at a reasonable volume.
Put familiar and comforting things around them such as toys, baskets etc.
If your pets do react badly to fireworks, then seek professional advice from your veterinarian.
Why not ensure your pets have a hearty and nutritious meal around nightfall. This will make them more likely to be sleepy!
Setting off fireworks is not illegal in South Africa, however certain areas have by-laws which prohibit people from using fireworks without permission from relevant authorities or during certain times
