PORT ELIZABETH - STRAY BULLET HITS 6 YEAR OLD IN ONGOING GELVANDALE GANG VIOLENCE

Three suspected gang affiliates were arrested in Port Elizabeth's northern areas, after a 6-year old girl was hit by a stray bullet in a shooting incident on Friday afternoon.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Pricilla Naidu says Provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Liziwe Ntshinga immediately implemented a 72-hour action plan after the incident in Gelvandale.

She says it is alleged that a 28-year-old gang member was walking from a shop in Fitchardt Street, when he saw the three suspects.

They started shooting at him and the child, who was playing in the front yard of her house, was struck by a bullet in the leg.

The suspects fled on foot and the intended target was not injured.

The child was taken to hospital, treated and later discharged.

Naidu says yesterday, the first suspect, aged 23  was arrested in Helenvale, and two hours later, the other two suspects, aged  23 and 24 were arrested in Bloemendal.

All three suspects are expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth magistrates' court on Tuesday, on two charges of attempted murder.
