NELSON MANDELA BAY - ALGOA BAY BECOMES THE SCENE OF 2 SEPARATE SEA RESCUES

At 07h55, Tuesday, 21 July, NSRI Port Elizabeth duty crew launched the sea rescue craft JLT Rescuer, accompanied by an EC Government Health EMS rescue paramedic, to patient evacuate a 60 year old Filipino crewman suffering an illness, from a bulk carrier motor vessel at anchor in Algoa Bay.

Arrangements had been made the night before following consultation between the ships Captain, the ships agent, MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre), a WC Government Health EMS duty doctor, Port Health authorities, EC Government Health EMS, Transnet National Ports Authority and NSRI Port Elizabeth duty controllers.

On arrival on the scene an NSRI rescue swimmer was transferred onto the ship and the man, in a stable condition, was taken into the care of our NSRI rescue swimmer and he was transferred from the ship onto the sea rescue craft.

In the care of the EMS rescue paramedic we brought the patient to our NSRI sea rescue base and he was transported by EMS ambulance to a local doctor for further medical care.

All Covid-19 precautions and protocols were observed during the operation.

NSRI Emergency Operations Centre, Telkom Maritime Radio Services, WC Government Health EMS, EC Government Health EMS, NSRI Port Elizabeth duty controllers, Transnet National Ports Authority and Port Health authorities assisted Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in communications, coordination and logistics during the operation.

The operation completed at 10h15.

At 17h30, Tuesday, 21 July, NSRI Port Elizabeth duty crew launched the sea rescue craft JLT Rescuer, accompanied by an EC Government Health EMS rescue paramedic, to patient evacuate a 24 year old Indian crewman suffering an injury on a bulk carrier motor vessel approaching Algoa Bay from deep sea.

Arrangements had been made the night before following consultation between the ships Captain, the ships agent, MRCC (Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre), a WC Government Health EMS duty doctor, Port Health authorities, EC Government Health EMS, Transnet National Ports Authority and NSRI Port Elizabeth duty controllers.

The motor vessel arrived in Algoa Bay during Tuesday late afternoon.

On arrival on the scene 5 nautical miles off-shore an NSRI rescue swimmer and the EMS rescue paramedic was transferred onto the ship and the man, in a stable condition, was taken into the care of our NSRI rescue swimmer and the paramedic and he was transferred from the ship onto the sea rescue craft.

In the care of the EMS rescue paramedic we brought the patient to our NSRI sea rescue base and he has been transported by EMS ambulance to a local hospital for further medical care.
