On Thursday, 9/07, a 48-year-old man was sentenced for the rape of his 16-year-old relative.
On 5 December 2016, the accused invited the teenager to walk with him to a nearby quarry in Malabar to discuss family issues.
While at the quarry, he slapped her and raped her.
She reported the incident a week later.
The accused ran away and after two years he was traced to King Williams Town.
He was arrested by the investigating officer, D/Sgt Nomfundiso Vazi.
He appeared in court and was subsequently released on bail.
On 9/07 he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the rape.
Nelson Mandela Bay District Commissioner, Maj Gen Thembisile Patekile welcomed the sentencing and re-iterated that ‘sentences such as this is a clear indication of the commitment of investigators in eradicating gender based violence.
We cannot allow vulnerable women to be preyed upon by sick minded individuals. The effects of such violence against a victim can remain for a lifetime therefore it is of utmost importance that the perpetrators are arrested and punished for their deeds.”
