The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation has welcomed the conviction of two Eastern Cape man for bank card cloning and fraud.
Between the period of June and November 2009 a card cloning syndicate was operating in the greater Port Elizabeth area.
The syndicate targeted various restaurants, and recruited waiters at these restaurants. These waiters were then supplied with handheld skimming devices in order for them to execute the skimming of cards targeting unsuspecting customers.
Thereafter the syndicate downloaded each individual card details and created cloned bank cards which they used for purchases at various merchandise shops.
Hawks’ investigation revealed that these fraudulent transactions amounted to approximately more than R33 352.81 and $20 682.82 which is equivalent to about R340 000.
The two accused, Siyabulela Cenga (39), and Thobelani Jayiya (40), were arrested by the Port Elizabeth Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team in November 2009, and charged for contravening the Regulation of Interception of Communications and Provision of Communication Related Information (RICA) Act.
A watertight case presented by the investigators culminated in their conviction by the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.
They have been in custody ever since their arrest after they reportedly threatened witnesses linked to their case.
The case has been postponed to 06 October 2020 for sentencing.
