PORT ELIZABETH - 2 SUSPECTS ARRESTED WITH ILLEGAL FIREARM AND AMMO IN NEWTON PARK DURING CURFEW HOURS

Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Metro Police officers swooped on two suspects in the early hours on Saturday, 26 September 2020 for various crimes including the unlawful possession of an illegal firearm and live ammunition.


The suspects were arrested in Newton Park after three NMBM Metro Police officers stopped the Toyota Tazz they were traveling in at 1am.

Upon searching the two 19-year old men, the officers found an illegal firearm and a magazine with eight rounds.

The two were arrested at 1:45am after three different number plates were also found in the vehicle, with the plate that matched the license disc found in the boot of the vehicle.

They were taken to the Mount Road South African Service Police Station and charged for:

-Unlawful possession of illegal firearm
- Unlawful possession of ammunition
- Driving Vehicle with false number plates
- Violating the National Lockdown Curfew.

It was later discovered that the firearm belonged to a deceased person.

NMBM Metro Police Chief Yolande Faro said: “I want to commend the staff for their vigilance and on a job well done. The public must also be reminded that we are still in Lockdown with a curfew from 00h00 to 04h00 that must be adhered to.
