EASTERN CAPE - HIGH SPEED CHASE THROUGH JEFFREYS BAY LEADS TO THE ARREST OF 5 SUSPECTS TRANSPORTING LIQUOR & STOLEN PROPERTY

On Thursday, police in Jeffreys Bay arrested five men for possession of suspected stolen property and also charged them for contravening the lockdown measures, for transporting liquor and traveling during a Curfew period.




On Thursday, 07 January 2021 just after midnight, it is alleged that members from the Humansdorp K9 unit were patrolling in Fountains Estate area, Jeffreys Bay when they spotted a green Jeep SUV near Mulberry Crescent.  A vehicle sped off on seeing a police vehicle and a chase ensued.  

Moments later, police managed to stop the vehicle on the N2.  

The five occupants in the vehicle failed to produce any permit to be on the road. On searching the vehicle, police found liquor, a laptop and clothing.  

None of the occupants could give satisfactory account about the items that were found in the vehicle.

 The five occupants were arrested for possession of suspected stolen property with two additional charges of contravention of the Disaster Management Act regulations. 

The detectives are looking at the possibility of linking the five men to a case housebreaking and theft.

The five men aged between 24 and 34 are due to appear in the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 11 January 2021 on charges of possession of suspected stolen property and two additional charges for contravening the Disaster Management Act regulations. 

In other news, the 37 police stations in the Sarah Baartman for the period between 30 December 2020 to 05 January 2021 recorded 706 arrests for the contravention of the Disaster Management Act regulations.  Some people were fined for not wearing a mask to visiting beaches.  

Among those who were fined was a tavern owner in Thornhill, who was allegedly selling liquor to patrons on Thursday, 31 December 2020.  An owner was fined R10 000.00 and police also seized 5 787.1 litres of liquor valued around a million rand.  

Acting District Commissioner, Brigadier John Lebok said, “Apart from the attendance of complaints, members also managed to enforce the DMA regulations.  Police will continue with their efforts and assist government in ensuring that people are adhering to the regulations, added Brig Lebok.
