The IPID's Eastern Cape office is investigating a case of assault by police officers.
It is alleged that Mrs Zille was talking to the voters and one person reported her to be campaigning.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate reported this via their Twitter account:
It is alleged that the police mishandled and assaulted Mrs. Helen Zille at a voting station.
It further alleged that a person was taking a video of the incident when the police took his phone away.
He too opened a case of theft against the police.
IPID has taken over the two cases.
It is alleged that Mrs Zille was talking to the voters and one person reported her to be campaigning.
The presiding officer allegedly asked her to leave and she refused.
It is alleged the police were called in and they pushed her out of the voting station.
