Energy regulator Nersa has given Eskom the green light to increase electricity tariffs by 9.61 percent.
This is less than half of what the power utility wanted.
This means households should prepare for a two-fold energy price shock over the next few months.
Electricity tariffs are now confirmed to increase from April while petrol and diesel prices are predicted to go up dramatically due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Last year, the High Court in Pretoria ordered Nersa to settle the tariffs by this month following public consultation with provinces.
Eskom wanted a 20.5 percent increase.
It says it's now assessing the financial implications of Nersa's decision.
