The Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene and her senior management hosted a group of 725 police trainees during an official send-off ceremony at the SAPS Provincial Headquarters in Zwelitsha today.
On Wednesday, 12 April 2023, Lt Gen Mene addressed a group of 725 new police trainees at the SAPS Provincial Headquarters, Griffiths Mxenge Memorial Hall, before departing to their respective police academies to resume with their 35 weeks of Basic Police Development Learning Programme.
A group of 645 trainees will be trained at the Bhisho Police Academy, while 80 trainees will undergo their training at the Graaff Reinet Police Academy.
These new recruits are forming part of the 10 000 Project, which is aimed at bolstering the capacity of the SAPS, and to enhance police visibility in general.
Their rigorous recruitment process started in June 2022, where applicants were subjected to various tests such as psychometric evaluation, fitness test and medical assessments.
These cadets were selected to join the South African Police Service, which is dubbed as the “Employer of choice in the country”.
Lt General Mene in her address stated that “it is heart-warming to see such an enthusiastic and energetic group of trainees. This is a beginning of a new chapter in your careers, and I hope that you will cherish it, up until you reach the retirement age. Always remember that you are carrying your family name, and now you have added that of the SAPS, so please do not disappoint us. After you have completed your training, do not forget to continue with your tertiary education" added Lt Gen Mene.
