THREE Nelson Mandela Bay firefighters were attacked and almost stabbed while extinguishing a bushfire near the Marina Sea Salt works in Perseverance, between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage, yesterday.
Motherwell Fire Station head Vincent Human said the three firefighters were ambushed just before 4pm. “They had arrived and spread out to extinguish the fire,” Human said. “While they were busy, four men [armed with knives] attacked them.
“The robbers demanded the firefighters hand over their cellphones. “Two of the firefighters, one a female, were hit in the face during the attack.” One robber attempted to stab a male firefighter but a scuffle ensued and the robber was stabbed in the upper body, he said. All four attackers fled.
“The members are in shock and battered and bruised from the attack.” All three firefighters were taken to St George’s Hospital for treatment.
