PORT ELIZABETH - SCHOOLS FINALLY REOPEN AGAIN IN PE'S NORTHERN AREAS

After almost a month of stayaways by thousands of pupils in the Northern areas of Port Elizabeth in Eastern Cape, schools reopen again on Monday.

On the first week of opening schools this year parents in the area shut down 52 schools, complaining about the shortage of teachers in schools.

As a way to cover the lost time, principals came up with a recovery programme this week, with some opting for longer hours and Saturday classes.

Provincial education spokesperson Malibongwe Mtima said they were happy with principals taking leadership in their schools.

“It is learning and teaching as usual, 143 teachers have been employed. It is best we deal with outstanding issues while children continue to learn,” Mtima said.

He said they would continue to work with the premier’s task team to ensure that by the end of this term glitches no longer existed in schools.
