The first confirmed case of the Zika Virus disease has been reported in South Africa. The case is that of a Colombian man who has recently travelled to South Africa from his home country. The businessman was in South Africa for four days when he complained of a fever. Zika virus is transmitted to humans through a mosquito that transmits other viruses like yellow fever, dengue and chikungunya.
Health minister Aaron Motsoaledi confirmed that the businessman who visited Johannesburg has been diagnosed with Zika by a private pathology laboratory.
"At the moment the National Institute for Communicable Diseases is busy conducting confirmatory tests. This businessman was in SA for 4 days when he went to see his doctor because of fever and rash but now he is completely fully recovered. This infection was acquired in colombia before he visited Johannesburg." says Motsoaledi.
