EASTERN CAPE - MANHUNT LAUNCHED FOR ANTI MINING ACTIVIST, SIKHOSIPHI RHADEBE KILLERS

Police are searching for gunmen involved in the killing of an anti-mining activist in the Eastern Cape’s wild coast.

Sikhosiphi Rhadebe was gunned down at his home in Bizana near Port St Johns on Tuesday night.

He was the chairperson of the Amadiba Crisis Committee, a committee opposed to titanium mining in the Xolobeni sand dunes. He was also a prominent taxi owner.

Rhadebe was shot eight times and died instantly.

The police’s Mlungisi Matidane says two men who posed as officers went to his home and told him he was under arrest.

“He prepared himself to go to these two gentlemen. They started shooting, and shot [him] in the head. The gentleman died instantly.”

Police are not speculating on the motive for the murder, but the committee believes the killing is linked to his opposition to the mining.

In a statement, the committee claims other members have also been attacked in the past.
