PLETTENBERG BAY - 65 YEAR OLD FISHERMAN RESCUED BY NSRI DURING HIGH TIDE

At 05h55, Tuesday, 10th May, NSRI Plettenberg Bay duty crew were activated following a call from the wife of a 65 year old local fisherman reporting that he was stranded on rocks surrounded by surf, between Keurboomstrand and Natures Valley, having been cut off by the incoming high tide.

NSRI Plettenberg Bay launched the sea rescue craft Ray Farnham and the Discovery Rescue Runner and the sea rescue 4×4 vehicle was dispatched to the scene. WSAR (Wilderness Search and Rescue) were placed on alert.

On arrival on the scene a rescue swimmer was deployed from the sea rescue craft Ray Farnham and taken ashore on the Discovery Rescue Runner and the rescue swimmer then waded through the surf from the shore over to the stranded fisherman who was on the rocks and the fisherman was assisted through the surf safely to the shore.

The casualty fisherman was released in good health and he required no further assistance.

He had been fishing during the night with friends and they had left during low tide leaving him to continue fishing on rocks.  At high tide the fisherman was reluctant to try to wade through the surf without assistance due to strong tidal surges and he raised the alarm.
