PORT ELIZABETH - NELSON MANDELA BAY METRO SAY CORRESPONDENCE REGARDING MTI'S APPOINTMENT LOST IN THE MAIL

The Nelson Mandela Bay Metro says correspondence concerning its head of Safety and Security may have either been lost in the mail or is still en route.

The metro has been criticised after it emerged provincial cooperative governance did not know of Linda Mti's appointment.

Mayor Danny Jordaan appointed Mti last month.

According to the Municipal Systems Act, the provincial MEC should've been informed of the appointment within 14 days.

Municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron says he utilised the services of the South African Post Office and not electronic mail.

Cooperative governance spokesperson Mamnkeli Ngam said, “Once that documentation has arrived, the MEC will apply his mind by going through the documentation and within 14 days he will respond then revert back to the metro with his views and opinions [on the matter].”

DA QUESTIONS SENDING IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS VIA MAIL

Meanwhile, the Democratic Alliance (DA) in Nelson Mandela Bay has questioned why the municipality chose to send crucial documents via post.

DA Eastern Cape leader Athol Trollip says he does not believe the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro's excuse that the correspondence to the MEC might have been lost in the mail.

“If you want a document to get lost interminably, you post them in South Africa. We believe that this all smoke and mirrors about this appointment.”

Provincial cooperative governance spokesperson Mamnkeli Ngam says they'll wait, despite it having been more than a month.

“We believe and hope that it's still in transit and that the department will get the documents.”

Jordaan's office has also denied opposition claims that Mti was appointed because their close acquaintances.
