The Eastern Cape Education Department has appointed 98 new teachers to fill vacant posts in Port Elizabeth's northern areas and Uitenhage.
About 143 allocated posts for Port Elizabeth will be finalised before the end of March.
This emerged during a media briefing held by Education MEC Mandla Makhuphula and the Acting HOD, Sizakele Nontsikelelo Natshilapala.
Disgruntled parents have closed more than 50 schools in the northern areas, demanding the employment of additional staff members and teachers, the provision of adequate resources for learners with special needs and a better teacher to pupil ratio.
Natshilapala says the appointment of the teachers is a result of a number of consultative meetings between the Education Department and its stakeholders.
The Acting HOD also urged the parents to let their children go back to school.
Makhuphula says the primary concern now is the recovery plan to make up for the time lost by the pupils who have been kept away from school.
He says he is confident that the parents will let their children go back to school, as the issue of teacher shortages is being addressed.
However, concerned parents say they are not satisfied with the number of teachers appointed.
The Education Department has promised to come up with programmes that will assist the schools to make up for the lost time.
