WESTERING - MAN WAVING TOY GUN AT MOTORISTS ALONG CAPE ROAD ALMOST SHOT BY POLICE

A man waving a toy gun at passersby along one of Port Elizabeth’s busiest roads was nearly shot by police on Saturday.

The man‚ in his 40s‚ was waving the gun at motorists in Cape Road in the Westering area at about midday.

Police spokeswoman Colonel Priscilla Naidu said police responded after being alerted by motorists.

“On arrival of the police the suspect pointed the firearm at the police officials on the scene. Not knowing it was a toy gun‚ police fired a warning shot next to him‚” Naidu said.

“While this was happening another police officer dive-tackled the man. A scuffle ensued and the suspect was arrested.”

It was only after he was arrested – on nearby Warbler Road – that police realised it was a toy gun. The man was taken to Kabega Park police station and is expected to appear in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Monday on a charge of pointing a firearm.
