PORT ELIZABETH - MOUNT ROAD POLICE OFFICER GETS 7 YEARS JAIL TIME FOR ACCEPTING R150 BRIBE AND A COOL-DRINK
A Mount Road police station officer has been jailed for seven years for accepting a R150 bribe and a cool-drink from a motorist.
Sergeant Mziwandile Mventshana, 43, and a colleague, Constable Khayalethu Hlamvana, 37, were found guilty on two charges of fraud by the Port Elizabeth Commercial Crime Court on Tuesday, Netwerk24 reported.
Three of Mventshana’s seven years in jail were suspended for five years. Hlamvana would be sentenced on September 30.
On December 30 2014, Mventshana stopped a motorist at a roadblock for an alcohol test.
The 25-year-old driver was over the legal limit. Mventshana said that in exchange for a cool-drink and R100, he would not report the matter.
After speaking to Hlamvana, it was decided the motorist should pay them R200 and buy them a drink.
The motorist only had R150, which he handed to the two officers. He then drove to the Mount Road police station to lay a charge.
The Hawks investigated and it came to light that another motorist had laid a similar complaint about the two officers that day.
They were arrested on April 15 2015. They were found guilty on May 6 this year.
