Three young men who allegedly robbed Fischers Jewellers in the Greenacres Shopping Centre on Friday and gunned down an innocent bystander, appeared briefly in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Lindokuhle January, 21, Olwethu Dlanga, 21, and Awonke Yako, 22, face charges of murder, attempted murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances and the illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition.
They were remanded in custody until today, when a date for a formal bail application will be arranged.
The prosecution will oppose bail due to the seriousness of the offence.
The men allegedly smashed open several display cabinets at Fischers.
As they tried to flee, they allegedly tried to hijack a bakkie, in the process gunning down driver Ronald Goduka, 66.
