PORT ELIZABETH - SO WHAT IS DANNY JORDAAN'S ROLE NOW IN NELSON MANDELA BAY METRO?

After the African National Congress’ (ANC) unsuccessful bid to retain the Nelson Mandela Bay it is unclear whether outgoing Mayor Danny Jordaan will take on the role of opposition leader in the metro.

The 64-year-old was deployed by the ruling party to stabilize the ailing municipality last year.

But support for the party dropped to just under 41 percent during last week’s polls, allowing the Democratic Alliance (DA) to become the largest party with seven more seats in council.

The ANC has been trying to cobble together a coalition of its own to take charge of Nelson Mandela Bay.

So talking about Jordaan’s role in council would be premature, suggested the party’s regional secretary Beza Ntshona.

"It still remains number one on the list. There are no indications that we will leave because its leading the list of the ANC. So we have not discussed that if this happens, because it is number one on the list of the ANC."

The DA is likely to partner with the United Democratic Movement which has two seats in council.

But it will need two more councillors on its side to get over the 50% mark.
