PORT ELIZABETH - "KAKDALERS" GANG MEMBER, DESWIN KLEINBOOI, SENTENCED TO 16 YEARS IN PRISON

A Kakdalers gang member was sentenced today in the Port Elizabeth Regional Court to an effective 16 years imprisonment. Deswin Kleinbooi (22) was sentenced for attempted murder: 10 years, illegal possession of a firearm: 6 years, illegal possession of ammunition: 2 years and malicious damage to property: 1 year.  The sentences of illegal possession of ammunition and malicious damage to property will run concurrently.

On 25 November 2015, at about 13:45, Kleinbooi fired several shots at a 17-year-old teenager in Ibex Road, Helenvale. The incident was gang related.  No one was injured in the incident.

On 14 May 2016 Kleinbooi was arrested by the Provincial Gang Investigation Unit in Standford Road near Die Gaat. He remained in custody until the finalisation of his case. Kleinbooi is also one of two accused in the murder of businessman, Naeem Desai who was gunned down in May 2016 while sitting in his bread delivery truck in Helenvale. The case is remanded to 13 April 2017.

Mount Road Cluster Commander, Major General Funeka Siganga commented that the sentencing emphasised that thorough investigation and close collaboration  with the prosecuting authority is key to ensuring that criminals such as these remain behind bars for a long time.
