PORT ELIZABETH - PE CHURCH LEADER GUILTY OF CORRUPTION CHARGES AMOUNTING TO ALMOST R3 MILLION

A Port Elizabeth church leader who was also the general manager of a development trust, Bishop Mzukisi Banzana, has been found guilty in the city's Commercial Crimes Court on four corruption charges involving nearly R3-million.

As a manager of the Mzingisi Development Trust, he solicited bribes to award building contracts for hundreds of houses in Port Elizabeth between 2004 and 2009.

Banzana was found guilty of four charges on Thursday.

He used the money to pay off a number of vehicles and to settle the bond for his Lovemore Heights home.

The Asset Forfeiture Unit has recovered R2.9-millionand plans to recover a further R378,000 from Banzana.

The case has been postponed to the 17th of July for sentencing.
