EASTERN CAPE - SASSA SOCIAL GRANTS MONEY STOLEN IN EC

Cash intended for social grant recipients has been stolen in Ngcobo in the Eastern Cape. This follows an attempted armed robbery of beneficiaries' cash in Makhaza in Khayelitsha at the weekend.

The CEO of social security agency SASSA, Thokozani Magwaza, says despite the incidents, the process of paying social grants has been running smoothly. Magwaza is conducting a site visit at the Ikwezi Community Centre in Gugulethu on the Cape Flats.

Magwaza says while an undisclosed amount of money was stolen in Ngcobo, an attempted cash-heist in Makaza was foiled on Saturday and no one was injured .

Meanwhile, beneficiaries of social grants in Nkomazi, Mpumalanga, have expressed relief after receiving their payment. Many, particularly the elderly and people with disabilities, at the Schoemansdal pay-point arrived at the local community hall early in the morning.

Some say not receiving their money would have been disastrous as grants are their only source of income. Meanwhile, hawkers at the pay-point have lauded government for its efforts to ensure that the grants are paid.
