At 09h33, Monday, 03 April, NSRI Port Elizabeth duty crew were activated by the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) following a request for a sailor suffering abdominal pains to be evacuated off the container vessel MSC Laurence, sailing from Durban to Port Elizabeth’s Port of Ngqura this afternoon.
We launched the sea rescue craft Eikos Rescuer IV, accompanied by an EC Government Health EMS rescue paramedic, and rendezvoused with the ship 10 nautical miles off-shore from the Port of Port Elizabeth and the EMS rescue paramedic and an NSRI rescue team were put aboard the vessel.
The patient, a 61 year old Indonesian sailor, was stabilised and transferred onto our sea rescue craft and brought to our sea rescue station and he has been transported to hospital by an EMS ambulance in a stable condition.
