EASTERN CAPE - EC ROAD CARNAGE SEES 6 PEOPLE DEAD IN 5 FATAL VEHICLE COLLISIONS

Six people have been killed in five motor vehicle accidents on Eastern Cape roads overnight, into Saturday morning.

Provincial Traffic deputy director Charles Bramwell reports that just before 07h00 on the R61 Port St Johns road near Buthulo towards Libode -  a hit and run occurred where a pedestrian was fatally injured. SAPS Libode will investigate the matter.

The other accidents all took place in the early hours of Saturday between 01h00 and 03h30.

On the N6 between Jamestown and Queenstown, approximately 10 km out of Jamestown, a Toyota Avanza that was towing a trailer lost control and overturned. Two people were killed and five were seriously injured.

On the R62 between Joubertina and Krakeel,  a vehicle overturned, killing a male occupant. Two other people in the car were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Bramwell says that just after 03h00,  a light delivery vehicle lost control and overturned on the Old Grahamstown Road near the North End Cemetery in Nelson Mandela Bay.

One person was ejected from the vehicle and was found dead on the scene. Four injured passengers were conveyed to a Port Elizabeth hospital.

And in East London, a tow truck driver was killed while attending to an accident scene on the corner of St James Road and Gately Street in Southernwood at around 03h30.

Bramwell says the tow truck driver was preparing to tow and take photographs of an initial accident when a Toyota Hilux came from the bottom of Gately street at high speed. It hit a stationary Range Rover and then collided with the breakdown driver. He died on the scene.

A case of culpable homicide was opened at the East London police station.
