EASTERN CAPE - 3 SUSPECTS ARRESTED FOLLOWING HIGH SPEED CHASE AND SUBSEQUENT DISCOVERY OF A CACHE OF ARMS IN VEHICLE

Eastern Cape police arrested three suspects following a high-speed chase on the R-72 outside Port Alfred on Friday.

Police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender, said that police were acting on a tip-off that the men may be carrying firearms.

She also confirmed that private security companies were involved in the pursuit.

In a statement late on Friday, Atlas Security said that “a number of firearms were recovered.”

The PE-based company said that their personnel assisted following a SAPS alert to be on the lookout for a suspicious vehicle heading towards Port Alfred.

It was flagged on the company's License Plate Recognition (LPR) camera system as being allegedly involved in various syndicate crimes while its movements were also monitored by the Atlas Control Room via CCTV cameras.

Atlas Security CCTV Manager, Jason Kümm, said they had been working hard over the past 18 months with various farming associations in the area to build a state of the art CCTV network.

“To date, we have seen a number of successes in fighting crime through the use of these CCTV cameras and our relationships with the SAPS and response teams on the ground,” he said.
