PORT ELIZABETH - MOTHERWELL PROTEST ACTION SEES WARD COUNCILLORS HOME PETROL BOMBED AND VEHICLES SET ALIGHT

Port Elizabeth police have arrested four people following an overnight protest in Motherwell in which a ward councillor's office was petrol-bombed and several vehicles stoned and some set alight.

Police spokesperson, Captain Andre' Beetge, says the office of the councillor for Ward 53 in Motherwell was attacked by angry residents on Tuesday night.

He said the office was damaged but no one was injured.

Beetge said the residents closed a section of the R-335 Motherwell to Addo road, apparently in protest over electricity outages in the area and illegal connections taking place.

He said they also torched a bakkie, stoned a truck which managed to pass through the protest area, while another truck carrying oranges was stoned and looted.

On Wednesday morning another truck was stoned and set alight, suffering significant damage.  Police were able to save a second trailer on the truck.

Four people were arrested and face charges of malicious damage to property and infrastructure.

Public Order Police have been deployed to the area.
