The South African Police Service in Uitenhage are investigating an inquest following the sudden death of a 59-year-old male, Samuel Marais at about 15:37 yesterday afternoon, Thursday, 29 August 2019.
It is alleged that two learners were walking down in Daniel Pienaar Street, Uitenhage when they were approached by two unknown males at about 14:35. One of the males suddenly threatened the learners with a knife and demanded their cellphones. The suspects took the two cellphones and ran away. The two learners immediately ran back to the hostel and reported the robbery to their principle. Mr Marais, the learners and another teacher got into a vehicle and started to search for the suspects. One of the suspects, a 17-year-old boy, was recognized by one of the learners, as he (the suspect) was walking in Channer Street, Uitenhage. Upon seeing the vehicle, the suspect ran into Buxton Avenue, Uitenhage and was apprehended with the assistance of another community member. Samuel Marais was standing next to the suspect when he suddenly fell to the ground. Community members contacted the ambulance services and Marais was declared dead on the scene. The cause of his death is not known at this stage and an Inquest was opened by SAPS Uitenhage, which is under investigation.
A case of robbery was also opened the same evening and the juvenile suspect was sent to a detaining facility in Port Elizabeth, where the case will be processed.
