EASTERN CAPE - 6 SUSPECTS BROUGHT TO JUSTICE AFTER BUTTERWORTH CASH IN TRANSIT HEIST

Four suspects aged between 29 and 32-years are expected to appear tomorrow at the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court for their alleged involvement in a cash-in-transit heist which occurred in Butterworth on Monday the 26 of August 2019.

This brings to six the number of suspects that have since been arrested.  Nkosinathi Wolela (28) was arrested at the crime scene, whilst and Bongani Kahlu (30) was arrested in Port Elizabeth last week Friday, with the assistance of the Flying Squad.

The additional four suspects were arrested on Tuesday in a joint operation between the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit, Crime Intelligence and the Tactical Response Team (TRT), in Butterworth and Dutywa respectively.

On Monday, 26 August 2019, G4S security guards were collecting money at a local store in Butterworth. One of the guards exited the store carrying a cash box and he was confronted by two armed men who threatened him with firearms before they forcefully took the money and fled the scene on foot.

A second guard acting as backup was also confronted by two armed suspects.  Wolela allegedly tried to disarm the guard but he was shot and wounded in the process.

Wolela is detained at a medical facility under police guard. He appeared in absentia on the 28 August 2019 at the Butterworth Magistrate Court and his case was postponed to Wednesday for a formal bail application.

Kahlu appeared at the same court on Tuesday he is expected to join the other five suspects today in their attempt to apply for bail.
