RWC2019 - EASTERN CAPE - WORLD CUP WIN SEES SPOTLIGHT FALLING ON DEVELOPMENT OF EC PLAYERS FROM DISADVANTAGED BACKGROUNDS

As the Eastern Cape prepares to welcome the Springboks after winning the Rugby World Cup over the weekend, the provincial sports department has committed to improving rugby at school level.

Three of the players who were in the starting line up of the Springboks on Saturday hail from the province.

MEC Fezeka Bayeni says they want to produce more players from disadvantaged backgrounds that can play for the national team.

“For the future what we want to focus on in as much as we believe that elite rugby or rugby development has some form of contribution but it is not enough, we want to change and concentrate on school focus sport and not just take one person from 15 players and sponsor him or her to go to a traditional rugby school. Lets focus on building that hub in the rural areas so one of the ways of developing rugby is to focus on schools that are in rural and township areas.
