UITENHAGE - GUNMAN ARRESTED RUNNING DOWN KAMESH JUST MINUTES AFTER SHOOTING VICTIM

It is alleged that the 20-year-old complainant was standing in front of his residence in Kamesh Road, Rosedale at about 20:00, last night, Monday, 13 January 2020, when two armed persons approached the complainant.

The one suspect then suddenly produced a firearm and started shooting at the complainant. The 20-year-old man managed to take cover behind a wall, and the suspect continued to fire shots at the victim.

The victim was wounded in his left calf as he was running towards the house. Alert members on patrol in the vicinity heard the shots being fired and immediately responded to the area where they successfully apprehended the 20-year-old alleged shooter, as he was running down Kamesh Road.

It was later established that the second armed suspect also allegedly ran from the scene and disappeared between the houses.

The 20-year-old suspect was arrested within minutes after the shooting incident and the firearm and ammunition that was still in his possession was confiscated. The 9mm firearm, of which the serial number was scratched off, will be sent for ballistic testing. The search for the outstanding suspect is continuing.

The 20-year-old man is due to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 15 January 2020 on charges ranging from attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. More charges might be added as investigations are unfolding.

The acting Uitenhage Cluster Commander, Brigadier Ronald Koll condemned the shooting incident in which a 20-year-old man was injured and said: "The South African Police Service will not tolerate these senseless acts in which people’s lives were endangered".  Brig Koll praised the police officers who acted promptly and commended them in removing yet another illegal firearm from the streets. The injured complainant was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
