At 05h43, Sunday, 23 February, NSRI Port Elizabeth duty crew were activated to launch the sea rescue craft Spirit of Toft to rendezvous with a bulk carrier at anchor off-shore of the Port of Port Elizabeth to patient evacuate a crewman suspected to be suffering a medical injury from a past incident.
The initial request for assistance was received from the ships agent the day before but unfavourable sea conditions resulted in all agreeing that the patients conditions was not life threatening and the patient evacuation was delayed until Sunday morning.
The sea rescue craft Spirit of Toft was launched and on arrival at the ship 2 NSRI crew went aboard and the patient, age 32, a Filipino citizen, was transferred onto the sea rescue craft and brought to our NSRI rescue base and in a stable condition he has been transported to hospital by EC Government Health EMS ambulance.
