A 20-year-old man was arrested and detained by the Mount Road Cluster Detective Trio Task Team for allegedly making a false statement.
On Wednesday, 25 February 2020 at about 09:40, police attended to an accident in Govan Mbeki Ave in North End. It is alleged that a Mercedes Benz was chasing after a white Toyota Yaris. The Yaris was travelling at high speed on the bus lane. The driver of the Yaris lost control and hit the verge. Two occupants got out and ran in different directions. The community chased after the fleeing men and managed to arrest one person.
Preliminary investigations at the scene revealed that the vehicle was a rented vehicle. The owner was contacted and confirmed that he hired the vehicle to a person. The man was contacted and he alleged that he was hijacked in Cape Road. He then proceeded to the Mount Road police station and opened a case of vehicle hijacking.
The ‘complainant’’ was taken to the accident scene and on further probing, it was established that he was lying about the hijacking incident.
It was also established that the cell phone in possession of the suspect that was arrested by the community, was a stolen cell phone. It is alleged that a woman was robbed earlier in Westbourne Road and that the cell phone belonged to her. The 19 year old suspect was arrested for possession of suspected stolen property while the 20-year-old man was detained on a charge of contravening section 9 of the Justice of the Peace and Commissioner of Oaths Act 16 of 1963. Further charges may be added at a later stage of the investigation.
