PORT ELIZABETH - POLITICAL PARTIES RALLY BEHIND PETITION FOR MEETING TO APPOINT NEW NMB EXECUTIVE MAYOR

A number of Political Parties in the Nelson Mandela Bay Council have petitioned the Speaker of Council to hold a special council meeting on the 12th of March.

The petition comes after two months of a leadership vacuum in the running of the Municipality.

The parties say this vacuum has resulted in zero direction and zero accountability of not only municipal officials - but of the political heads of the various departments.

At a multi-party briefing on the Port Elizabeth beachfront on Tuesday morning, the petition signed by 62 Councillors from the DA, Cope, UDM, United Front and ACDP was presented to the media.

The ANC, EFF, AIC and Patriotic Alliance did not sign the petition.

Those that signed the petition are calling for the special council meeting of 12 March to deal with the election of an Executive Mayor and the removal of the current deputy mayor and the appointment of a new one.

It also calls for the removal of the current Speaker of Council, the appointment of a new Speaker, and the appointment of a new Chief whip of Council.

Lastly, the petition is calling for the removal of Section 79 Committee chairpersons and the appointments of new ones.
